General/ Level 1

Suitable for beginners, as well as those who are new to Iyengar Yoga, and those returning to yoga after an absence due to injury or illness. The use of props allows students of all different levels to achieve alignment in their poses. All the categories of poses are introduced—standing, seated poses, forward bending, twisting, back bending, shoulder stand, and restorative poses. Our teachers use clear demonstrations, exact language, and physical adjustments that allow students to come into an asana, hold the asana, and come out of the asana with control.

On Thursdays, we offer a special class called Extend and Renew. This General Level class includes many restorative poses, as well as poses that stretch and strengthen.

Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar Yoga works on structural alignment of the body through the practice of asanas or poses. Over time, students develop strength as well as flexibility. Everyone has different amounts of flexibility, stamina, and strength; we put emphasis on a student's ability to do what THEY can do. To help with that, Iyengar teachers make use of props, like blocks, belts, and blankets as aids, so that a student can be in alignment no matter their level of proficiency. Physical alignment leads to inner calm, poise, and equilibrium. This way of working was developed by BKS Iyengar, who was one of the major teachers to spread the practice of yoga in India, and then throughout the world.

Why Dragonfly?

Dragonflies are agile and graceful and are found on all continents except Antarctica. The presence of dragonflies indicates a healthy ecosystem. Dragonflies undergo a metamorphosis, spending up to 5 years as nymphs, before becoming the beautiful, winged creatures that are easily recognized. Mr. Iyengar said that yoga students, like dragonflies, are beginners for years, and that "yoga does not change the way we see things; it transforms the person who sees."
